FAQ
Is merino wool activewear itchy?
No. High-quality merino wool is not itchy. Estroni uses fine merino fibres at 18.5 microns designed to bend gently against the skin rather than prickle it. This reduces irritation and makes it suitable for sensitive skin, including for people who’ve found traditional wool uncomfortable in the past.
Is merino wool too hot for summer or warm weather?
No — this is a common misconception. Merino wool is naturally temperature-regulating, meaning it helps keep you cool in warm conditions and warm when it’s cooler. It does this by absorbing moisture vapour and releasing it, rather than trapping heat and sweat against your skin. When it is warm, the fibers also loosen up to release heat and when it’s cold, the fibers constrict to maintain it.
What does merino activewear feel like on the skin?
Merino activewear feels soft, smooth, and breathable on the skin. Unlike synthetic fabrics that can feel slick or clammy, merino has a dry, natural hand-feel that stays comfortable even when you move or sweat.
Why is merino wool activewear more expensive than polyester?
Merino wool is a premium natural fibre that costs significantly more to source and produce than polyester, which is plastic-based.
You’re paying for:
- Renewable, breathable fibre
- Natural odour resistance
- Temperature regulation
- Greater comfort and longevity
- Fewer chemical treatments
In short, it’s designed to perform better and feel better — not just look good on a hanger.
How is merino wool activewear considered low-tox?
Merino wool is naturally breathable, odour-resistant and temperature-regulating, which means it doesn’t rely on heavy chemical finishes to perform.
Compared to synthetic activewear, it reduces prolonged skin contact with plastic fibres and added treatments, making it a preferred choice for people seeking lower-tox, skin-friendly materials. Our products meet OEKO TEX standards meaning there are no harsh chemicals or dyes used.
Is your merino wool superwash treated?
Yes - our merino wool is superwash treated to allow for easier care and improved durability.
This treatment helps prevent shrinkage and makes the garment suitable for regular wear and washing, while still maintaining the natural benefits of merino wool. There are different methods of superwashing. We use an OEKO TEX certified manufacturer so you can be rest assured there’s no harsh chemicals used in the process.
How often should I wash merino activewear?
Less often than synthetic activewear. Merino naturally inhibits odour-causing bacteria, so garments stay fresher between wears. Many customers find they can air their pieces between uses and wash only when needed.
How do I wash and care for merino wool activewear?
- Cold machine wash on a gentle cycle
- Use mild detergent
- Avoid fabric softener and bleach
- Lay flat or line dry in shade
With proper care, merino activewear maintains its shape, softness, and performance over time.
Will merino wool activewear pill over time?
All natural fibres can pill slightly with friction, especially in high-movement areas. However, high-quality merino fibres are long and strong, which helps minimise pilling. Proper washing and avoiding abrasive surfaces will further reduce it.
Is merino wool activewear squat-proof?
Estroni merino shorts are designed for coverage, but like all natural fibres, merino behaves differently to synthetic fabrics when stretched.
When squatting or in deep stretches, the fabric may become slightly sheer (around 10%), particularly if worn with dark or seamed underwear. This is due to the natural structure of merino wool and how it opens under tension — unlike polyester, which relies on heavy compression and coatings.
For best coverage, we recommend:
- Nude or seam-free underwear
- Choosing the correct size
- Avoiding darker underlayers
This allows you to enjoy the breathability and skin-friendly benefits of merino, while feeling comfortable and supported during movement.
How do I choose the right size?
Our sizing is true to size, with a slightly more relaxed fit. If you’re between sizes, we recommend sizing down for the best fit.
If you’re unsure, you’re welcome to order both sizes and return the one that doesn’t feel right — return postage is on us. We want you to feel confident and comfortable in your choice.
Is your merino wool ethically sourced?
Yes. Our merino wool is sourced from suppliers certified under the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS).
RWS ensures animal welfare, responsible land management, and traceability through the supply chain — including strict requirements around sheep handling and the prohibition of practices such as mulesing.
This certification allows us to source merino with confidence, while supporting ethical farming practices and environmental care.
