Unlike polyester, which traps sweat against your skin and becomes "slimy," Merino absorbs moisture into its core, keeping your skin drier and providing a natural "anti-slip" grip on your mat.
In a Hot Yoga or Bikram environment, your body relies on the evaporation of sweat to cool down. Synthetic fabrics (polyester/nylon) are non-absorbent; they simply push liquid sweat around. Merino wool is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture vapor before it even turns into liquid sweat, releasing it into the air to keep your core temperature stable.
One of the biggest frustrations in Hot Yoga is losing grip during inversions or downward dog because of "slick" synthetic leggings. Because Merino absorbs up to 35% of its own weight in moisture without feeling wet to the touch, the surface of the fabric remains matte and textured. This provides a much safer, stable grip against your mat compared to the "plastic-on-plastic" slide of traditional activewear.
For a practice involving deep stretching and inversions, 100% Merino isn't ideal—it can "bag out" at the knees. Estroni’s 95/5 Merino-Elastane blend provides the necessary 4-way stretch and recovery, ensuring your leggings stay opaque and "squat-proof" throughout the entire flow.
The most dangerous part of Hot Yoga is the walk to the car. In synthetics, you are covered in cold, clinging sweat. Merino retains its thermal properties even when damp, preventing the "post-class chill" by buffering your skin against the temperature drop as you leave the studio.
