How to Reduce Microplastics From Laundry (Simple, Practical Steps)

Synthetic textiles can shed microplastic fibres during washing. If you’re trying to reduce microplastics from laundry, the goal is to reduce friction, reduce over-washing, and capture fibres where possible.

The short answer

Wash less often, wash more gently, and use fibre-capture tools if you’re washing synthetics. These steps can reduce microfibre release and extend the life of your clothes.

Step 1: Wash less (when it’s reasonable)

Over-washing increases wear and fibre loss. If an item isn’t visibly dirty, airing between wears can be enough — especially with natural fibres.

Step 2: Use gentler wash settings

  • choose gentle cycles where possible
  • avoid overly hot washing unless you need it for hygiene
  • avoid overloading (too much friction) and underloading (too much agitation)

Step 3: Reduce friction and abrasion

  • close zips and hooks (they abrade fabrics)
  • wash synthetics together rather than with rough items
  • avoid harsh tumble drying when you can

Step 4: Capture fibres (especially for synthetics)

Fibre-capture tools (like wash bags or filters) can help catch microfibres released during washing.

UNEP specifically notes options like washing less and using capture solutions (e.g. washing bags) as ways to reduce microfibre release.

Step 5: Long-term: choose materials that don’t rely on plastic fibres

If your goal is “plastic-free,” the most direct lever is fibre selection. For the shopping guide: Workout clothes without microplastics.
